Below is a message from the NVP of Youth:
In looking over the Operations Manual it states that our "primary youth organization is the Naval Sea Cadets" - but it "encourages cooperation with and support of all recognized youth programs - the Boy Scouts, Boy's & Girl's Clubs, Big Brothers, Girl Scouts, Camp Fire Girls" and all the rest of these types of organizations that bring a community together.
The Manual goes on to say that we should be working with the local school authorities to solicit their support for our council youth programs. And I wonder how many of our region's, area's and council's support other youth programs.
Scholarships - there are many regions around the country that have scholarships. But, I don't remember seeing much about them over the years.
And then came an e-mail from the Great Lakes Region - talking about the 5th Annual Geography Bowl between the Lombardi Middle School and the USS GREEN BAY Sailors. A Naval Sea Cadet will flip the coin to see who gets to answer the first question. I have heard of other organizations doing just this same thing. Maybe this is something that your region can be part of - I'm sure that Bobby Ferguson would be happy to help you setting one up.
Another thought entered my mind - there is a Youth Medal recognizing the outstanding Sea Cadet and/or NJROTC/MCJROTC Cadet in a unit or school which is sponsored by our Councils. How many regions actually know about this medal and present one every year.
Speaking of the NJROTC Units they are having National Field and Drill meeting on 8-9 April at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola. This is their yearly competition for Units from all over the United States. And, in today's Orange County Register (Southern California's Orange County) - it had a great write up about how the teams know their drills. The colored pictures showed the students competing at a local drill competing.
I've shared some thoughts, ideas and suggestions with you today and hope that you will let me know your ideas, thoughts and suggestions. The "Youth" part of our communities need to be educated in the ways that the Navy League can support, help and work with them.
